چکیده

In India, the first confirmed report of chloroquine resistance in P. falciparum was reported in 1973. Since then there has been a rise in resistance to chloroquine in Plasmodium falciparum and vivax as also to pyrimethamine sulphadoxine group of drugs. Resistance to artemisinin and its derivatives has not been documented in India except for isolated case reports. In a multicentric study of arteether in patients of uncomplicated falciparum malaria, it was found that the cure rate was 97% with fever clearance time between 24 168 hrs, and parasite clearance time between 24-72 hours. Our patient remained febrile and malarial parasites persisted on peripheral smear even after 144 hours of treatment of artemether. The response came only after administration of mefloquine. We conclude that, this patient had infection with P. falciparum that was resistant to chloroquine and artemether.

Effects of Artemether Treatment on Prepatent and Patent Schistosoma mansoni Infection in Experimentally Infected Mice

Background: Schistosomiasis is a chronic debilitating parasitic disease. Long-term repeated use of praziquantel (PZQ) for control of the disease morbidity may lead to resistance or reduced susceptibility to the drug. Artemether (ART), the anti-malarial drug may become an alternative therapy to PZQ as it also displays anti-schistosomal properties. Objective: To assess the effects of artemether e...

In vivo selection of Plasmodium falciparum pfmdr1 86N coding alleles by artemether-lumefantrine (Coartem).

Artemisinin derivative-based combination therapy is expected to suppress the development of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance in Africa. We have performed an artemether-lumefantrine (Coartem; Novartis) follow-up clinical trial in Zanzibar, in which pfcrt K76T and pfmdr1 N86Y frequencies were determined before drug administration and in all recurrent parasites during a follow-up period of 42...
